Ruth Carney is a professional TV and Theatre Director with many years of eclectic experience. Ruth has worked in the West End and on Broadway. She has been lucky enough to work in regional theatres and also has extensive experience in education both with drama schools and her own performing arts academy Carney Academy.

2021 has already seen Ruth direct Emmerdale and this summer she will be directing BBC drama Father Brown.

2020 saw Ruth direct Jim Cartwrights Two for The New Vic Theatre and Casualty for BBC.   Ruth is currently the Director UK Placement Director on All Creatures Great and Small.


This year Ruth has directed two blocks of Emmerdae this year and The Miami Showband Story written by Marie Jones and Martin Lynch at The Belfast Opera House and tour.   At the beginning of this year her first episodes of Holby aired on the BBC which was produced by Vikki Tennant.


 She was delighted to one of the TV Directors on the High End TV Stepping Up Scheme run by Creative Skillset and the NFTS.    This saw Ruth undertake a year of development including career consultation, career gap training and placements on High End Drama Productions. She is also being mentored by Rebecca Gatward through Directors UK  and has recently shadowed Rebecca on the latest series of Cold Feet.


In 2016 Ruth was accepted onto the BBC Directors Scheme where she directed her first episode of Doctors.  Since then she  has directed various blocks of Doctors.  She has completed shooting her first short film "FunTimes" by Samantha Robinson.  

Ruth started directing while studying at the University of Sheffield.  She then went on to complete a Master's Degree in Theatre Directing at The Russian Theatre Academy, Moscow and Middlesex University.


After training Ruth assisted many respected directors from Hettie Macdonald to Giles Croft. She also directed herself and formed her own portfolio of work which you can read more about throughout this website.  During this time she also completed the National Theatre Studios Emerging Directors Programme.


As well as her own successful independent work as a director Ruth has been Associate to award-winning director and current Artistic Director of The Old Vic Matthew Warchus on Lord of the Rings, Our House and Ghost.
